Our Theory of Change

Inputs

At the Friendship Library, we use a variety of resources to drive reading outcomes. These include curated, age-appropriate books; digital reading content; trained volunteers and educators; partnerships with corporate institutions, schools, and communities; a digital platform for content delivery; and operational support for programme implementation. We leverage community spaces, volunteer networks, and strategic collaborations to ensure both physical and digital interventions are accessible, inclusive, and sustainable.

Activities

  • Establishes and maintains physical library spaces that are safe, welcoming, and resource-rich.
  • Facilitates community-centred book clubs to promote peer learning and shared reading experiences.
  • Delivers reading support classes for children with reading difficulties.
  • Organises engaging literacy activities that build reading habits and promote reading enjoyment.
  • Deploys “Friendship Library in a Box” to extend access to underserved schools and communities.
  • Provides a free digital library with a growing catalogue of quality books.
  • Designs and delivers interactive online literacy activities to reinforce skills and engagement.

Outputs

As a direct result of our activities, the Friendship Library will:

  • Increase the availability of books and reading materials for children in Africa, in both physical and digital formats.
  • Expand access to structured reading programmes and literacy support.
  • Encourage regular participation in book clubs, reading sessions, and literacy activities.
  • Improve reach to underserved and low-resource communities.
  • Increase engagement with digital reading platforms and online learning tools.

Outcomes

These outputs will lead to measurable changes in children’s learning and behaviour. In the short to medium term, we hope to see:

  • Improved reading skills, including fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.
  • Increased confidence in reading and self-expression.
  • Stronger reading habits and a growing interest in books.
  • Greater inclusion of children with diverse learning needs.
  • Increased parental and community engagement in children’s literacy development.

Impact

In the long term, these outcomes will contribute to broader, sustained change, which includes:

  • Improved academic performance and educational attainment.
  • Enhanced critical thinking, communication, and lifelong learning skills.
  • Greater equity in access to quality education and learning opportunities.
  • Empowered children who are better equipped to succeed in school and in life.

The Friendship Library will contribute to a future where all children become strong readers with the confidence and capability to shape their own paths, which will lead to building stronger communities and brighter futures.
