Empowering The African Child Through Reading
Why Literacy Matters
At least 90% of 10-year-olds can’t read with comprehension in Sub-Saharan Africa — and the situation is worse in conflict-affected areas. This slows their learning, affects mental well-being, and directly impacts their futures (UNICEF).
The Problem
Across Ghana and many parts of Africa, too many children are struggling with basic reading skills. Even after several years in school, many students cannot read and understand a simple story appropriate for their age. Several challenges contribute to this problem.
The Solution
The Friendship Library is designed to help children discover the joy of reading and build strong literacy skills early in life. We create welcoming library spaces where children can access books, participate in guided reading sessions, and explore stories that inspire imagination and learning. Our approach combines community engagement, mentorship, and technology to make literacy accessible and exciting.
