The Problem
Across Ghana and many parts of Africa, too many children are struggling with basic reading skills. Even after several years in school, many students cannot read and understand a simple story appropriate for their age.
Several challenges contribute to this problem:
Limited Access To Books
Many children grow up in homes and communities where books are scarce. Outside of school textbooks, children often have little opportunity to explore stories, develop curiosity, or build a habit of reading.
Overcrowded Classrooms
Teachers work hard to support students, but large class sizes make it difficult to give each child the individual reading support they need.
Exam-focused Learning
Education often focuses on memorization and passing exams rather than nurturing a lifelong love of reading. As a result, reading can feel like a task rather than an enjoyable activity.
Few Safe Reading Spaces
Many communities lack libraries or child-friendly spaces where young people can read, learn, and explore knowledge freely.
When children fall behind in reading early, the effects ripple through their entire education. Reading becomes harder, learning slows down, and confidence drops.
